Cornwall Coast Path - Gwithian - Portreath and back 11 miles Wed 21st August 2019

Updated: Sep 16, 2019

When in Cornwall you should walk the coast path, so that's exactly what I did.

I'm up and ready to park at 9am in the National Trust carpark at Godrevy, free for members and quiet at that time of the morning, apart from a half dozen motorhomes waiting to park in the best spot.

As I make my way onto the coast path the first thing I see is the beach below where the seals hang out, but the tide is in, so not much beach for them to lounge on, and not as many seals as yesterday.

I wander along the path mostly by myself, Its noticeable that the path is disappearing into the sea, each time a new path is created further out, freshly cut grass and hedges just trimmed, alot of work goes on to keep these trails open and accessable to us all.

The views just get better at every turn, there is something about the connection to the sea and how it makes you feel.

The path is mostly flat until your about 2 miles from Portreath, then there are a few hills to go up and down, it's only a hill 😅.

There are alot of tourists walking the opposite direction now heading the St Ives, big packs on their backs and in it for the long haul by the looks of it, 5 miles and Portreath comes into sight, people on the beach surfing and just sitting around, once I'm there it's time for a coffee, it's taken 2.5 hours to walk here, I'm walking back as well.

Coffee and rest, I buy some water and head back up the hill to join the coast path again, now the sun is beaming down the colours of the water is just beautiful, its hard to believe I'm in England, four miles into the return journey, a women with her dog asks where i am walking to, I explain I'm on my return leg of my walk, she had parked her car in St Ives took a bus to Portreath, then was walking the 16 miles back to St Ives, she had started in Minehead doing sections whenever she could, following a hard year she told me this was her challenge to help keep her sane, I wish her good luck and push on, it is funny though how people find sanctuary in different things, but I will agree that being out in the open and by the sea helps the mind.

Before long I see the impressive Gwithian

beach again, people have filled it now enjoying the sun and the sea 😎

Another great walk completed, now for an afternoon on the beach with all of the other holiday makers.

Love Cornwall
