South West Coast path Lynton- Combe Martin 14 miles

Updated: May 29, 2021

Thursday 27th May 2021, just over an hour's drive to Lynton Devon, car parked at 9.30 back packs on, and we begin to walk towards the valley of the rocks and onto the coast path, when I say we, I mean my walking buddy Andy has joined me today.

We are only on the path for about 5 minutes when we see three dolphins down below, first time I have ever seen them in the sea, too far away to video or take pictures, but clear as day in the blue turquoise waters, my wife is going to be so upset when she finds out I've seen dolphins 😂 we drove to Cardigan bay last year to see them, but never caught a glimpse of any.

Onwards we go along the steep sided path, we dont even get another mile then the goats down on the cliffs start appearing, little ones following the bigger ones on steep slopes, fantastic to see them in a natural wild environment, even the smell of goat was noticeable on the path.

We continue along the steep and hilly path taking in the views and enjoying the sunshine, about an hour into the walk my mate announced he needed to get his nuts out, in the middle of the coast path🤣 you do what you need to matey, was my reply😂 mind once he did get his packet of nuts out to eat, he was happy.

The views are unbelievable around each turn, but there are some pretty steep sections to climb and drop down into, and it's non stop, we decide that we are going to stop for lunch at 12,00 once we find the best spot, and we did that on a pretty amazing outcrop with awsome views, Andy went straight in for the sausage roll, me I just need to get my knee supports off, the only way to do that was lose the boots and trousers 😂 luckily no passing eyes to see me stood in my pink boxer's.

Fed and rested we have about 6 miles left to do, and they were six very hard miles, the great Hangman nearly broke us both, but we did it gracefully, or was it reluctantly, finally Combe Martin is in sight, although we had the push the old knees a bit more on the steep decent down to the town, once there the only thing we wanted was a cold pint in the very nice rare sunshine.

832 metres of elevation today, 14 miles walked, tomorrow is a simple 5 miles to Ilfracombe, then buses back to Lynton, now for a rest, some food and a glass of wine, then bed me thinks, great walk as usual, and very lucky with the weather 😊
